Dietary Advice

We are keen to promote wellbeing in pets from all aspects and currently we see many pets that are obese.

Our vets now offer individual appointments specifically for weight management and dietary advice. You can book these direct with the surgery.

Pets are weighed regularly and prescription weight loss plans are enforced. Weight charts and support materials are available.

You are most welcome to pop in and weigh any pet at any time, and if you require assistance then please ask.

The waiting room has a large walk on weigh-scale  but for cats and small pets we have a more accurate weigh scale in our theatre area so again, please just ask.

Exotics

It’s not just everyday domestic animals we’re happy to see, but more unusual creatures too

When it comes to your pet’s wellbeing, you want to ensure they’re as healthy and happy as possible. That’s why here at Stokesley Veterinary Practice we don’t just see cats, dogs and rabbits, but more unusual creatures such as small furries, birds and reptiles too.

Whether your companion has fur, scales or feathers, our team of friendly experts have a wealth of experience working with all types of creatures. That means you can rest assured your exotic animal will receive a high level of care when they come to see us.

Whilst our team of vets and nurses are equipped with the knowledge and understanding required to ensure reptiles and birds are healthy, it is important to remember that we do not specialise in dealing with these types of animals. Therefore, should your pet require further examination or specialist treatment, you may be referred.

Hospitalisation

We have fitted out our hospitalisation area with comfortable kennels. They are white plastic kennels that are clean, hygienic and nice and warm.

We can individually heat some kennels for patients which require additional warmth on recovery.

Lighting can be bright to enable thorough examination, or dimmed to allow animals to rest. Each pet is given comfy “vet-bed” to lay on and patients are provided with water and feed as soon as is possible post-op.

For our smaller patients, kennels with solid glass doors enable us to keep a close eye on them whilst maintaining a constant temperature. We can also supply oxygen into these kennels.

Microchipping

As of April 2016 it is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped

When it comes to ensuring your pet has your contact details with them at all times, unfortunately identification tags aren’t the answer. While it’s always recommended your pet has one, they can easily become lost or damaged. That is where microchipping comes in.

Although it’s not nice to think about being separated from your companion, should they ever find themselves anywhere other than by your side, a microchip is the only way you can be 100% sure you are contactable.

As of April 2016 it is a legal requirement for all dog owners to have their pet microchipped. Failure to do so could result in a £500 fine.

A microchip is the same size as a grain of rice and it is inserted under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. This procedure is quick, relatively painless and only ever has to be done once.

When your pet’s microchip is scanned using a specialist scanner, it will reveal a unique code. It is under this code that your contact details are stored on a national computerised database that can be accessed 24/7. That means no matter what time your pet’s chip is scanned, you are just a phone call away.

A number of animal organisations hold specialist chip scanners. These include all veterinary practices, the RSPCA and dog wardens. So should you ever become separated from your companion, it’s likely you won’t be for very long.

Please note: It’s not just cats and dogs that can be microchipped, but rabbits and ferrets too.

Neutering

If you don’t intend to breed from your pet, neutering is the most responsible action to take

Every day, litters of puppies and kittens are handed over to animal organisations because their owner didn’t understand how much they would cost or how much time they would demand. For that reason, if you do not intend to breed from your pet, neutering is the most responsible action to take.

Neutering is the removal of the reproductive organs, making it impossible to breed. A female animal will be spayed, having her uterus and ovaries removed, and a male animal will be castrated, which is the removal of the testicles. As well as preventing unwanted pregnancies, the procedure has a number of other benefits too. These include:

For female animals…

  • No longer coming into season, bleeding or attracting unwanted attention
  • No risk of mating with siblings
  • Prevention of mammary tumours and uterine infections

For male animals…

  • Control of roaming, spraying and aggressive/territorial behaviour
  • No risk of mating with siblings
  • Prevention of testicular cancer

It’s not just cats and dogs that can be neutered, but other small animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. We recommend neutering male dogs from 6 months onwards, and females 12 weeks after the end of a season. We advise that bitches are allowed to have their first season before they are spayed. Male and female cats can be neutered from 6 months onwards.

If you choose to have your pet neutered at Stokesley Veterinary Practice you can rest assured they’re in great hands. Our team of highly skilled veterinary surgeons have a wealth of experience neutering animals. In fact, the majority of our patients are at home recovering with their family on the same day as their surgery.

Pet Exam

Our extended weekend opening hours means your pet never has to miss an essential health check

When it comes to your pet’s health, you probably already know that they should be receiving an annual check-up to ensure they’re healthy and happy. However, it can sometimes be difficult finding the time to get to the vet.

At Stokesley Veterinary Practice we appreciate that your pet’s wellbeing is important to you, but that friends, family and work can sometimes get in the way of making it to the vet. For that reason we have extended our weekend opening hours so that you don’t have to take time out of your busy schedule during the week.

We are open for appointments from 8:00am until 2:00pm on Saturday.

When you bring your companion to see us you can look forward to a warm welcome from a friendly member of our team. Your companion will then be thoroughly examined by one of our veterinary professionals.

Once the vet has completed their assessment, they will explain any findings to you in a way that you understand. They will then answer any questions you may have, before recommending any necessary treatment and when you should next bring your pet to see us.

At Stokesley Veterinary Practice we pride ourselves on our ability to communicate efficiently with our clients.

It is important to remember that many of the conditions that affect our pets don’t always have any obvious symptoms. It is for that reason you are strongly recommended to have your companion checked once a year.

Vaccinations

It is just as important to vaccinate puppies and kittens as it is to vaccinate small children

Health checks for puppies and kittens

If you’ve recently got a puppy or kitten, you’re probably very excited about what the future holds for you and your new companion. However, you’re probably also aware of the responsibility you now have to ensure your pet is protected from health problems.

At Stokesley Veterinary Practice we recommend all puppies and kittens are brought to see us monthly until they are six months old. As well as being delighted to meet the newest member of your family, one of our veterinary surgeons will thoroughly examine your pet on each visit to make sure they’re growing well with no potential problems, and that they have received all the necessary routine treatments. Once your companion is six months old they will need a check-up at least once a year.

Vaccinations

A vaccination is an injection that is given to an animal to protect them against a range of harmful diseases. It is important to remember that vaccinations are just as essential for puppies and kittens as they are for children.

Once your pet has received their initial vaccination course, they will require a ‘booster’ vaccination once a year to keep their immunity levels high.

At Stokesley Vets we are using the most up to date leptospirosis vaccine (L4). This requires most puppies to receive three vaccinations at 8,10 and 12 weeks of age. Puppies over 10 weeks of age will require two vaccinations 4 weeks apart. Your puppy will be fully examined at each vaccination to ensure they are in good health. Dogs are routinely vaccinated against:

  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis
  • Canine Distemper Virus
  • Leptospirosis

Kennel Cough vaccination is recommended additionally, and is a requirement if your dog will be going into boarding kennels. This is a once yearly vaccine and is administered via the nostril.

Cats should receive their first vaccination around 9 weeks of age and their second 3-4 weeks later. They will receive a full health check at each vaccination and are routinely vaccinated against:

  • Cat Flu Viruses
  • Feline Leukaemia Virus
  • Infectious Enteritis

Rabbits should be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). They can be vaccinated from 5 weeks of age.
